Aw, Crap

Bangor planning board approves Supercenter near mall.

BANGOR - Despite traffic concerns raised by its future neighbors, the nation's largest retailer received the city's approval Monday night to build a 209,000-square-foot store off Stillwater Avenue.

Slated to open in the spring of 2008, the Wal-Mart Supercenter would replace an existing 114,000-square-foot store less than a mile away on Springer Drive. The project is expected to cost $23.6 million, according to company officials.

With the city's approval under its belt, Wal-Mart Real Estate Business Trust now is awaiting state environmental and traffic movement permits, members of Wal-Mart's development team said during a special meeting of the city's planning board at City Hall.

I like Wal-Mart Supercenters - it's where we do the majority of our grocery shopping, becuase we like cheap stuff. (Except for their produce, which is pretty bad most times).

This is a bad idea in so many ways, though. Stillwater Ave cannot handle the traffic generated by the current stores in that area. What makes them think a new store and some small improvements to the road will suddenly improve the traffic flow?

There was likely one consideration in this decision - increased tax revenue. Of course, the city of Bangor won't lower my taxes as a result. Nope, they'll just allowing unplanned urban sprawl to increase the city's take, even if that means you are stuck in traffic or overall business at the mall is harmed due to their lack of foresight.
