American Ingenuity at Work
Dave in Texas finds a story that shows even something as seemingly useless as Silly String can assist in the war effort. Amazing to think that a completely ridiculous childhood diversion can help save lives. (H/t: Ace, who thought it was cotton candy in a can when he was a kid.)
It reminds me of this story, about a novel use for feminine hygiene products.
This sort of on-the-spot ingenuity is such a common thing in warfare that someone has written a book about it.

Years ago, when I was a Red Cross First Aid instructor, I suggested the use of tampons for bullet wounds, Kotex, and simple saran warp for all wounds. Simple but effective.
