Well, Yeah...

MSNBC headline on Rev. Ted Haggard, the former head of the National Association of Evangelicals, who stepped down today after being accused of having a homosexual affair:

Haggard known as maverick evangelical leader

I'd say. If the allegations are true, then that's understating the case, really.

UPDATE - The story just keeps getting worse. Drug use?

I think the resignation is too hasty and sends an opposite message than, "I want to step aside to avoid conflict of interest while the investigation that proves me innocent proceeds." A leave of absence would have accomplished that, but the quick resignation says, "I'm guilty" much louder than his contrary words.

In speculating about the effects if he is shown to be guilty, I hope that they would be similar to the aftermath of the televangelist scandals in the Swaggert/Bakker days. The televangelists were becoming influential in politics but the exposure of thier hypocrisy killed that voice. I think that was a good thing, because the church should avoid tying religion and politics together. If this scandal takes down Haggard and the other leaders like Dobson that are lining up to defend him, then it is the parachurch organizations' turn to lose their political influence, and the sooner the better.

I think you're right, there. If you're innocent, the truth will out and you'll be vindicated.

The parachurch movement has gotten quite strong in recent years, hasn't it?

I think the strength of the parachurch organization comes from how people typically move around more. The local church is less important to you if you know you aren't putting down roots in a particular place. The parachurch organization, though, is always there in your mailbox or on the radio, but it lacks the personal one-on-one accountability and discipleship that the local church provides.

Well, well, 10:40 today, apparently Haggard has admitted to "some guilt" but not to all of the allegations. Looks ugly. I'm still hoping Dobson goes down with him.

Won't happen. Dobson is an institution.

Like Snowe I guess.
