The Blogger and Columnist Full Employment Act
So I spent some time this morning moping about the election results. Denial, anger, acceptance - the stages of grief must be fulfilled.
Now I'm at, oddly enough, a point where I'm kind of looking forward to this. In the words of John Kerry - "Bring. (pause) It. (pause) On." I'm a blogger and a columnist in a time of divided government. There were times, such as last week, when I struggled to figure out what to write about.
Those days are over.
Maine alone is going to be interesting. We had five candidates on the ballot and the governor didn't even break 40% in his re-election bid. Baldacci did receive more votes than any other single candidate, but he has to deal with the fact that more Mainers collectively wanted him gone than wanted him in office. Will he govern like he's got a huge mandate, or will he make more effort to compromise and build bipartisan bridges? I've always liked the guy in the few times I've met him, and congratulate him on his victory. But the Republicans are going to be watching every move he makes.
This is the first time the Democrats have significant power in a time when the blosophere is fully operational. The fight for leadership alone is going to be fun to watch. What's going to be even more enjoyable is watching the nutroots clamor for power and be rebuffed - the Democrats won a heck of an impressive victory last night. Do you think they'll acquiese to the Kossacks? And how will the Kossacks take that?
I don't mean to imply this is going to be all happy fun time, but it is certainly going to guarantee bloggers are not bored for the next few years. Plus, let's get real here - the sobbing 'woe is me-ism' that I'm seeing from some in the blogosphere is not going to do us much good, so why not just get ready for the next battle instead of whining over the last? It's McClellan versus Grant here - who are we going to be?
