I'm Sure a Correction is Coming
Last week, the Bangor Daily News ran an Associated Press story on the front page about Sunnis being burned to death.
It's okay, though. I'm sure the correction is on its way, and will be as prominent as the original story.
And this isn't an isolated incident. These bloggers make compelling cases, and I think the Associated Press, which has made stuff up in the past, has some serious questions to answer. The relationship between people and the press is based on trust. We have to be able to trust what the press reports, since reporters act as our eyes and ears to the events of the world.
The founders of this country considered the press important enough to protect in the Constitution. When the press prints false or biased information, it betrays the trust given it by law and by the American people. The Associated Press needs to take decisive action to punish those who abused that trust and bring truth back into its reporting.
