Time to Get Angry

Well, I'm ready to vote.

Democratic activists have decided the best way to fight the Republicans is to out closeted gay members of Congress. This is despicable behavior, and it should be condemned. Patterico points out, though, that it is being celebrated.

What is the justification for this, other than to embarrass someone? Perhaps these idiots think these outings will lead to a mass exodus of evangelicals from the Republican party. In some cases, they might be right. But I think what you'll see is a growing anger among Republicans at just how low some Democrats are willing to go.

I'm going to vote Republican to keep people that Mike Rogers and the Daily Kos support out of office. This sort of dirty politics should not be encouraged - if the Kossacks win with tactics like these, expect to see this sort of thing over and over again in the future. If you're a conservative thinking of sitting this election out, please don't.

Tomorrow, I want to see Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi Howard Dean or other Democratic leaders express outrage and disagreement with these tactics and separate themselves from Mike Rogers and the Daily Kos. If not, then we have no choice but to assume they find these sort of tactics acceptable.

Thanks, Mike. A few weeks ago, I was going to hold my nose and vote. Now, I can't wait.

UPDATE - Dan Reihl says it's time for Republicans to use Kos as a weapon.

Here's a list of the candidates with ties to the Daily Kos
. If you're in any of these districts, maybe it would be a good idea to start asking these candidates whether they agree with the man whose money they are taking.

UPDATE II - Maybe it's time for Democrats to start listening to Bill Clinton:

We must stop the politics of personal destruction.

We must get rid of the poisonous venom of excessive partisanship, obsessive animosity and uncontrolled anger.

That is not what America deserves. That is not what America is about. We are doing well now. We are a good and decent country but we have significant challenges we have to face.

In order to do it right, we have to have some atmosphere of decency and civility, some presumption of good faith, some sense of proportionality and balance in bringing judgment who are in different parties.

Ah, nostalgia. I wonder if Clinton will speak out against the actions of the Democratic activists now engaged in the very politics he criticized?

UPDATE III - In the comments, Javier uses an extraordinarily weak argument in an attempt to justify this tactic:

It is legitimate to out gay Republicans, since that party stands for vitrolic hatred and bigotry against gay Americans. Homophobia harms people and people who use it to gain politically while engaging homosexuality themselves deserve public exposure and ridicule. Shame on homophobes of all orientations, but double shame on homophobes that are bisexual or gay.
This is nonsense. One, there's only one party I've seen lately that has attempted to use the sexual orientation of specific individuals as a political football. Kerry's clumsy handling of Mary Cheney, "the list" of gay Republicans and now this 'outing.' They do this while mouthing platitudes about how much they love and support gays and lesbians - and this seems to work.

Javier's statement also makes another error - it attempts to define people by one facet of their lives - their sexuality. He is saying that homosexuality is not a big tent lifestyle. In order to be 'acceptable,' one must conform to a particular orthodoxy. Thinking for yourself? Not allowed.

But they go further - if you do not conform, then you will be subjected to persecution, all in the name of "progress." People like Javier are willing to unleash tactics they claim to despise to "end discrimination." To put it another way, they have to destroy gay privacy to save it.

The ONLY political strategy of the left is voter suppression.

They BITCH about it when the michigan 'pubs said, the only way to win is to convince blacks to NOT vote (for democrats, the left ignored that part of the e-mail) and they cried voter fraud, when actually it is this thing called "POLITICS!"

Meanwhile the dem's will praise "record and overwhelming turnout!" which hasn't happened yet, but now, the dem's are October surprising the 'Pubs, not with successes, but with 'pub "failures" in the hopes of forcing a "voter suppression." Will there be any lawsuits? will there be any rolling stone articles, will there be any VALID complaints by the right that are made, let alone published?

Of course not, cuz 'Pubs have these two things, even the women, called TESTICLES! We can take our hits, and not blame anyone else, but for the left? it is ALWAYS someone elses fault.

You go Slug...and you are damn right it is time to get angry!

You've been attacking gay people for years. Trying to regulate their private life, by overturning Lawrence V. Texas and imprisoning gay people. Trying to stop gay people from choosing their spouse. Nullifying contracts between gay people in Virginia.

You support laws that directly affect my private life.

And now you're just so offended that a Republican is outed as a hypocrite. Sorry - if Larry Craig wants to regulate my personal life - we have every right to expose his PUBLIC life (i.e. having sex in a public space - which is an illegal activity). Don't want to be outed - then don't have gay sex. Being gay is NOT a private activity.

Hey, Downtown Lad. I remember you well from Ace's site. Your reputation precedes you, and that's not a good thing.

You were banned there.

And now you're banned here. I don't want to give you a chance to engage in the same angry, hateful rhetoric here that you employed on Ace's site.

If you'd bothered to figure out what I believe, you'd find out that I am against the FMA, agnostic on gay marriage and actually rather libertarian on issues related to homosexuality.

I see, though, that you just engaged in unwarranted assumptions.

But I'm looking on the bright side - I got to join the club of conservative bloggers who have had the chance to ban you. Thanks for giving me that opportunity.

I'm voting TOMORROW absentee. I got motivated enough to go work for candidates this weekend. These people cannot have any reins of power.

Javier, the only person that stands for vitrioic hatred around here is you. You don't know us, yet you judge us out of hand as homophobes. What an idiot you are.

On a happy note, I will be making a special effort to vote, because of idiots that think they can sway me by crap like this.

I don't think he was judging You, but casting judgement on your party, which is not known to be very tolerant of the homosexual community.

We know we can't sway you right wing guys. You guys are activists, sitting there reading blogs in your bedroom (or worse, at work). You guys would rather die than vote for a Democratic candidate. No, it's the undecided who need to be shown the true nature of the Republican party...the corrupt status quo that's held power for too long. (Don't worry, give Democrats a chance and they will probably rise to the same level, but we'll see...)

This is not about "outing gay Republicans" but exposing hypocrites who say one thing and do another. Do I say, not as I do. I can do what I want because I have the power and you don't. Well, most voters are sick of it.

Larry Craig being gay (or merely having occasional gay sex, even if he does self-identify as heterosexual) is not slander, not a disgrace, and not a big deal. What is a very huge deal is him being gay AND AT THE SAME TIME voting against the rights of the gay community.

I would never do what Rogers did. But Rogers cannot be dismissed as a thug. He has reasons for his actions which can easily be defended upon the basis of morality. And don't tar all liberals with the Mike Rogers brush. His actions are extreme, an opinion which apparently you and I share. I would never do what Rogers did, but I'm very glad he did it.

That's called integrity: i.e., putting your principles ahead of your self-interest. An alien concept to the liberal. And Rogers is a sickeningly grotesque thug.

That just means that rather than being just amoral, you're an amoral coward.
