The Coming Bloodbath?
It isn't pretty.
I'm trying to stay optimistic, but think the coming loss is the inevitable outcome of the refusal of the Republican party to actually respond to the people who put them in office. They spent all of 2004 warning us about the effects of a Democrat takeover of the government and promising things like immigration reform, tax reform and a coherent plan regarding the war.
After winning, they did none of that. So why should it now surprise them that conservative voters are angry and disinclined to fight for Republicans this year?
If they lose, the Republicans will likely blame Mark Foley. They should really blame Dennis Hastert, Bill Frist, George Voinovich, Olympia Snowe and the arrogant "Gang of 14" in the Senate, among others. It's time for Republicans to learn that the words "representative democracy" mean more than just a way to describe a political concept.

When my brother was in college, he met Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. This must have been when GHWB was president. Anyhow, my bro asked him about shifting political winds in the US, and surprisingly, Schlesinger said that as far as he could tell, it was all a matter of how long it took the ones in power to disgust their base of support. I would have expected more partisan fire, but a few years later, it happened to the Dems, and it looks like the GOPs going to get it this time.
