Something Beats Nothing?

That's what Bob Owens says, and I tend to agree, although I am starting to drift into the "Hastert should resign" camp.

People are going to walk into their polling pace and cast votes for the candidates on their ballots.

Have you ever gone to the ballot box and thought, "you know, Congressman "X" really screwed up. Even though he isn't from my district, I’m going to vote for someone with a radically different viewpoint than my own to teach him a lesson, even if I get screwed in the process."

All politics is local.

Now, about Hastert - Allah predicts a resignation by tomorrow evening. I hope so. Hastert has already succeeded in annoying the base, and now he's alienating the nation. I don't think the man was involved in a coverup - I believe he does have some principle. This is just pure and simple incompetence and bad management. Hastert's people seemed to know that something untoward was going on between Foley and Congressional pages, and either didn't tell him, or they told him and he didn't take it seriously.

Neither explanation is all that flattering to the Speaker. In the past few days, he's gone from (questionable) asset to major liability. The Republicans might take a political hit if he resigns, but at this point, I believe they'll take a bigger one if he stays.

It's time to show Hastert the door.
