Television's Golden Age?
This evening, I watched some television to clear my head and ended up really enjoying it. Two shows in particular grabbed my attention. One was "Heroes." It was an odd blend of comic book geekiness and "Lost" style twists and drama. I'm not sure I'll always watch it (my daughter won't always be as accommodating with her naps, after all) but it was different, which is (almost) always good.
I then watched the second episode of "Studio 60." It was good, but Aaron Sorkin better work out his issues against the religious right and studio executives soon, or the show will collapse under the weight of his demons. There were moments of great writing followed by moments of Sorkin's clumsy moralizing. At those moments, there was almost an audible thud as the show crawled to a stop. My only consolation is that "The West Wing" suffered with the same problems in its first few episodes.
Often, we hear television critics talk about the 'golden age of television' as the time when Lucy and Ricky were on the air. While I respect that opinion, I happen to disagree. These days, we have movie stars looking for shows to act in, and we have shows written and directed by people with incredible talent. From "24" to "Lost" to "The Office," television has grown up quite a bit and is now telling complex and compelling stories. Plus, at times, it's really fun.
No larger social point to make. There are some good shows on these days, and with winter coming up, that's a good thing.

Amen and amen about Sorkin--haven't watched Heroes yet, it's on the TiVo. Watched the Sorkin last week and was shocked at how it only took him three shows to go from fresh to stale. Hope he manages to pick it up, because from where I sit, there are too many shows that will be kicking his butt.

I am at the point now where I actually chose to watch tv over a movie. The acting and writing are great and you have time to develop some good plots and characters. Todays tv shows are like the old serial novels.

I'm not sure about Heroes yet. I'm worried it's going to be a little too "postmodern" for me. Add to that there was only one act of actual heroism in the first episode, and my skepticism grows. I'm not sure why they felt they had to throw in a dark conspiracy to make a good show. I was really hoping for something focusing more on the idea of ordinary men and women coming to grips with extraordinary powers. That seemed like poignant enough premise for me. Heck, they could just have gone that far and added a villain or two and they could have been head and shoulders over most of the other "superhero" crap on tv.

TV writers have really gotten it down to a science. Even formulaic procedurals like Law & Order are much more entertaining than most crime movies. We just watched the first season of Battlestar Galactica (the new series) and were very impressed with its writing and depth of character.

Studio 60 is gonna have at least one more week of religious right christian bashing since the crazy christians bit still didn't air. Everything but the attempts at humor are good, I kept wondering if sorkin bothered to hier anyone who was funny, well, theres hughley, but I'm missing all of the "genius" that is supposed to be matt, the only parts that are funny aren't creatively funny, but sarcastic and quippy. Everything but the funny, I like, when he tries the funny he falls flat.
As for movie stars and stuff. I remember reading an interview with freddy prinze jr. after he did his guest stint on "Friends" saying that he had been busting his but for the last 4 years to get into any crappy movie, and the first time he really had fun was on a TV show, so he was intent on finding a TV sitcom he can join with. I kinda liked that attitude since it was just honest and cool.
