More on the "Memorial"

Whatever happened to actually memorializing something on a memorial?

I guess allowing people to think for themselves was just too much for the good folks on the Arizona 9/11 Memorial Commission to handle, so they felt the need to provide 'context' and 'educate' those who will visit their stupid frisbee-shaped piece of perforated tin.

Allah, Ace and Mary Katharine are providing the roundups on this growing story.

What annoys me is that too often, artists and architects see memorials as a way to 'communicate their vision' rather than as a way for a community to remember a particular event. The focus becomes more on the 'vision' than on the event, and that's when things like this happen.

This memorial is a neat design, but a bad execution. It's pedantic, insulting and trite. In fact, the only good thing about it is that it serves to remind people how unseriously many take the ongoing struggle against Islamic extremism.

Things like this make me wonder when we crossed the line in design from simply doing something heartfelt and beautiful to requiring deeper "message" which is invariably lefty.
Is it simply that all of the normal folks shy away from getting involved in this type of endeavor? I guess I can understand that. I can't think of anything more tedious than being locked in a conference with a bunch of "socially conscious" bleeding hearts looking to put their stamp on every single aspect of public life. Oh-so-sincere. Oh-so-long winded. Morons.

I am a conservative Republican who supports the memorial.
