Five Years

I cannot believe it's been five years. I watched "9/11," the outstanding documentary by the Naudet brothers. The images from that day are still powerful. Mostly they make me angry. Angry for what happened, and angry for how divisive some have made this day. Since that day, many on the left have said it was the president's actions since September 11 that have led to a lack of national unity.
Nonsense.
On September 11, 2001, I was a graduate student. I first heard the news on the "Bob and Sheri" show as I drove to class that morning.
It was such a beautiful morning.
I went to my office and checked the news online, only to find most of the news sites inaccessible. Traffic was too high. So I went downstairs to the history department, where a television was set up. On the television screen, the news was showing video of the burning towers. There were about a dozen of us in the room. One of the people in that room was a faculty member in the history department. As he watched the news, his only comment was this:
"I wonder if the president is crying to his daddy?"
He smiled after saying this, as though he'd said something clever. I wanted to punch the son of a bitch in the face. It was at that moment that I realized to some, this day meant little other than simply being a political club to use against an administration they had already decided to hate.
When I'm completely honest with myself, I admit that it is the image of that professor's smirk that keeps me voting for those who want to continue fighting this war regardless of who is in the White House. That guy's words have motivated me more than any speech or any commercial to support those who actually believe this is a war.
So, thank you, professor, for being such a hateful jerk. Wanting to keep you and your ideological bretheren out of power has kept me working against your party - on this blog and in the world outside of it.
September 11, 2001 changed me.
I'm sorry that it didn't change you.
Hot Air has a good roundup of news and video.

It's hard to believe that people like that have so hardened their heart that something like that doesn't even phase them, just feeds their hate.
Sad.
