Baldacci's Pathetic Plea

Just saw a commercial for John Baldacci's re-election campaign. In it, a Bath Iron Works employee says something along the lines of "when the president tried to shut us down..." and credits the governor with keeping the shipyard open.

What?

The Base Realignment and Closure Commission is an independent panel authorized by Congress. The president has very little to do with the process, other than approve the list. If the governor wants to throw red meat to the Dems, it should at least be based in some truth.

This may seem a small thing, but it displays the ugly partisanship that Baldacci's generally genial nature manages to hide. I like the governor as a person, but urge him to correct the record on this ad and stop pandering to the worst instincts of the Democratic party.

I'm confused about another point made in the ad, and that is the number of jobs Baldacci created and how well the state is doing. Listening to democrats, the economy is terrible and any jobs created during the Bush era are substandard, below minimum wage, and left over from all the jobs that went overseas. So which is the real story?

I haven't seen the ad, but like your dad says, there's a bunch of controversy over the economic data flying around at the moment. The liberal Maine Center for Economic Policy just put out a report saying the economy is terrible here, so obviously they're not looking at the same part of the state Baldacci's pr people are.
