A Competitive Race? In Maine?!?

That's what this poll says.

All year long, whether leading or trailing in our polls, Baldacci has proved unable to climb past a 45% level of support. Early in the year the often struggled to reach 40%.

Seven percent (7%) now say they plan to vote for a third-party candidate, down from 10% in July. Even if that number declines further, it's clear that in such a tight race the several Independent candidates could affect who wins.

Baldacci's administration has been plagued by charges of incompetent stewardship, an impression fostered by reports from the Federal Reserve and elsewhere naming Maine's economy as one of the most lackluster in the union.
Like Mulder, I want to believe, but I think in the end, Baldacci will eke out a win. The partisanship of Maine Democrats is like a law of nature. At the moment, some are angry enough to go for a third-party candidate, but when it comes down to what they do in the voting booth, I think a lot of them will hold their nose and connect the arrow for Baldacci rather than allow Chandler Woodcock (who I will vote for) into the Blaine House. I worked at Momma Baldacci's in the 1980's and spent quite a bit of time hanging out with John and Paul....mostly Paul. I wish I had the foresight to record some of the ...um..."shenanigans". Especially in the summer at the Skowhegan place.
My family is largely still in the Portland area and wish I could tolerate coming home more often. It's been painful watching my birthplace fall from half a country away.
