Commenting and Fair Use

I would like the anonymous commenter who cut and pasted an entire article onto my blog to read this. Also know that your comment has been deleted, and your IP address has been added to the list of those who are not permitted to comment on this blog. I take fair use quite seriously, and do not wish to provide a place where people feel free to abuse copyright law.

As a writer, I have a great deal of respect for those who make their living by putting pixels on a screen, and for that reason will delete any comment that consists of nothing more than someone else's article. When I link an article, I prefer that it be on a site where I know the writer has allowed his or her thoughts to be published.

Links are encouraged, as I always enjoy reading a well-written article. If you have an article you want me to read or comment upon, email me. Outright reposting of an article will not be tolerated, because I dislike lawyers and don't wish to have them contact me to ask why a particular article is posted in its entirety without compensation for the author.

A fellow whose name you'd likely recognize was in the habit of emailing me entire c-n-p articles from Maine newspapers for a while, with certain parts bolded. Thankfully, he didn't win his primary election, else we'd all be getting them on a daily basis.

Unbelievable. It's like "fair use" doesn't exist.
