McCain for President? Never.

McCain has always annoyed me, but I was starting to come to a resigned acceptance of the fact that he might win the Republican nomination in 2008. Given the choice between him and Hillary!, it would become a 'hold my nose and vote for him' thing.

Now, I'm not so sure I can even do that. Recently, McCain said the following on the Don Imus show:

"He [Michael Graham] also mentioned my abridgement of First Amendment rights, i.e. talking about campaign finance reform....I know that money corrupts....I would rather have a clean government than one where quote First Amendment rights are being respected, that has become corrupt. If I had my choice, I’d rather have the clean government."
I know that McCain doesn't see political giving as a form of free speech, and while I have issues with the over-regulation of campaign finance, I can accept that certain rules are needed to ensure honest government. However, McCain has also made it clear that he doesn't mind his legislation being used to regulate actual speech, such as what happens on blogs like this one.

Captain Ed (link above) has some good thoughts on the subject. McCain seems to want to make it illegal to speak out against any sitting politician, while protecting the ability of incumbents to use their office as a platform for free speech. His views are both autocratic and elitist, and such a man should not be allowed anywhere near the Oval Office.

Comments

That comment from McCain sounds bad, but I'm hoping he was misquoted or the quote was taken out of context. He can't possible believe that First Amendment rights are not that important. Perhaps he was just making a point about how insanely corrupt and unethical the system is.
