Always Something There to Remind Me...

Of why I don't particularly like Senator John McCain.

Sen. John McCain said yesterday that the Federal Election Commission is "corrupt" and that lobbying reform is not the solution to cleaning up a fundraising scandal that has engulfed Capitol Hill.

The Arizona Republican and co-author of the McCain-Feingold campaign-finance reform legislation said the commission is rewriting the law through its decision-making process.

"The Federal Election Commission, which is corrupt, will not enforce existing law, much less rein in ... this excess," Mr. McCain said.

What, does McCain think he's debating on the internet or something? Disagreement with an interpretation of a law is not evidence of corruption. It's simply disagreement. McCain doesn't seem capable of seeing this distinction, and constantly ascribes bad faith motives to his political opponents. I know the media says he's the front-runner for the Republican nomination, but if that does happen, my vote won't contribute to his victory. I do not plan to support him, and would only vote for him if the alternative was much worse.

Unfortunately, given the current make and mood of the Democrat party, the alternative will in fact be much, much worse. Having said that, I still won't vote for McCain. I'll go Libertarian before I'll vote for that RINO PoS.

I don't see how McCain could win the primaries, even if a bunch of Democrats go vote for him (in the states that allow that; mine doesn't). I've yet to meet someone who does vote in primaries and who does not strongly dislike McCain.

Open primaries annoy me.

I think you're right Enas - the Democrats are in bad shape right now. If they could bring themselves to nominate someone like Phil Bredenson of Tennessee, there could be a good campaign there. If they nominate someone such as Hillary, things will be politics as usual.

Same with the Republicans. They need to find someone who's not associated with the sheer ugliness of recent politics - whether that ugliness is their fault or not.

Slublog, yah I'm not real happy about our prospects in '08. This will be the first Presidential campaign with no clear successor to the sitting one in my lifetime. Cheney isn't a viable option due to health. Condoleeza Rice, while a seemingly stunning choice, has no real campaign experience, plus I don't think she will go for it anyway. Jeb Bush is right out. I will not vote for another Bush presidency. Ever. Period. Still, Governor's tend to do better than Senators in Pres. campaigns. Any good choices there?
