Perspectives on Miers

Jonah Goldberg has a very good column on Miers in National Review:

There's much panic and wishful thinking about what all this means for the Right in America. Howard Fineman of Newsweek declares that the conservative movement is "falling apart at the seams." This, too, is delirium. Such spats come with being a majority party. Recall that another president made a vastly more divisive Supreme Court play once. FDR tried to pack the Court with a whole herd of cronies. His party went batty. Insults were hurled in all directions. The scheme ended in a humiliating loss for FDR. And yet: The Democrats were reelected three more times.
Also, my latest column is available at the Republican Journal website and it's about...yeah, you guessed it...Harriet Miers.

Sorry about that. It will all end soon, I promise.

Will it end when Mires fails to be appointed?

I like your column, the John Kerry argument rings true. The John Roberts was a great appointment of a strong and intelligent person. Mires is a slap to those who trust Bush and a burning cross to those who hate him. What gives? Is this intentional?

I think the right has discovered their power with this administration. The Clinton years were hard, it seemed the nation lost it's mind. The right has come too far to be set back by any mistakes made in this term. The Dems can't rally because they have no leadership or plan. This will not hurt the right in the long term, it is just a disappiontment.

The Democrats truly are delusional if they think they can regain power simply by sitting back and watching the GOP "fall apart." Yeah, you guys are arguing amongst yourselves, but eventually one side will win, Miers will either be confirmed or not, and that will be that. It's not going to be a permanent schism.

Dems have a bad, bad habit of thinking that victory is just around the corner, that the "pendulum" is about to swing their way. "Things are gonna change; I can feel it!"

Guess what Dems were saying in 2002 and 2004?
