Rudy Rising

So far, I've been extremely unimpressed with the potential Republican nominees for president in 2008, with one exception - Rudy Giuliani. This article sums up pretty well why, if Giuliani decides to run, I'll support him.

THE REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP VACUUM has many conservatives, many Republicans, and many mainstream Americans longing for authority, for someone to step in and run things. Someone to take charge visibly of the day-to-day conduct of the country's affairs. Somebody who will butt heads willingly, even joyously, with obstreperous backstabbers, obstructionists, foot-draggers, and whiners, whether in the opposition party or his own. Someone who will joyfully champion a public fight against waste and inefficiency. Somebody who may be at times conspicuously wrong, but who will, nonetheless, be conspicuous.

It sounds like Rudy Giuliani to me.

Giuliani's leadership ability is his greatest asset, but as an extra special bonus, he'll be able to take media attention away from John McCain without resorting to the sort of phoniness the Arizona senator uses to attract journalists.

Giuliani is for real. And I think he'll either be the greatest beneficiary or greatest loser over the conservative revolt to the Miers SCOTUS nomination. Too many angles on that one to offer serious analysis yet, but I'll be watching him closely.

The question is, will he be as good in '12? I'm not sure the GOP can realistically expect to win the next election no matter who is running on either ticket. If Rudy is the real deal, why waste him in '08 unless you're sure he'll win?

The only problem with Giuliani is that he's espoused pro-choice views in the past. I'm not sure the "base" for the Republicans is ready to nominate a pro-choice presidential candidate.

Worse, if he does become a contender and recants his pro-choice views, what are we to make of it? Is it a serious change of heart, or something done simply to appease the masses? Would that leave any guarantee of a potential regression while in office?

I hate to become a "one-issue" voter, but as appealing as Giuliani might be on a variety of issues, I just don't know if my conscience would allow a vote for a pro-choice candidate, Republican or no.

Whether the GOP wins or not depends entirely on who they run. If they run a party stalwart like (pleaseno) Jeb Bush, the conservative-but-boring George Allan or Mitt "Who?" Romney, they will lose. Badly. After eight years with one president, people are normally ready for a change.

Offering Rudy as a GOP candidate would present the opportunity for people to vote for change, while staying within one party. Rudy's pro-choice views could be troublesome to the party's conservative base, but I think he could placate a lot of people by promising to appoint constructionist judges to the courts - something I think he'd do, as he's shown a preference for no-nonsense officials in the past.

The Democrats are actually in worse trouble than the Republicans in 08. Everyone makes positive noises about Hillary Clinton, but I don't think she could win the presidency. I've seen her speak publically before and she's not especially good in front of crowds (and this was a very friendly crowd at a university). Plus, the long knives will be out for her in the left wing of her party, since she has been mildly hawkish on the war.
