Miers for SCOTUS
Meh.
WASHINGTON — President Bush on Monday chose White House counsel Harriet Miers to replace retiring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the U.S. Supreme Court.Sorry, but this feels like cronyism to me, and judging by the reaction on the right side of the blogosphere, I'm not alone. This is a huge disappointment and a mistake on the part of Bush - he's made a pick that demoralizes many of us inclined to support him."She will be an outstanding addition to the Supreme Court of the United States," Bush said during a press conference announcing his pick.
Saying she has a "record of achievement with the law," Bush said Miers also has "built a reputation of character and integrity" and possesses a "deep compassion and abiding sense of duty."
UPDATE - Criminy, Andrew. Learn to use the web before you spout off. Update to the Update - Sullivan corrects.
LUNCHTIME UPDATE (1:46 p.m.) - I just spent some time reading about Miers and the more I read, the more discouraged I get. Given the choice between encouraging a base he's spent the last few months annoying (spending too much money, refusing to do more than recite applause lines on progress in Iraq, not pushing for needed entitlement reform, etc...) and giving a job to a marginally qualified friend, he chose the friend over those of us who worked extremely hard to help him get re-elected.
It would just be nice, for once, if that famous "Bush loyalty" extended to his supporters.

The lame duck is coming early this time, even before the mid-term elections.

If he continues to annoy his base, those elections are not going to go well for the Republicans.

He is supporting his base - his rich friends and himself - the religious rhetoric was always for the sheep and they laped it up. She helped in Texas with his reserve records and the texas lottery - Miers did her work for him and here is the reward. Just as Roberts helped him get selected by the SC in 2000.
The way you look at the left is the same way bush looks at you, the working class.
Enjoy

Bill, that's crazy talk.
He's supporting Miers because she's his friend. Where's the documentation regarding the national guard?

Oh, and when searching out supporting documentation, anything having the name "Bill Burkett" doesn't count. I don't tend to trust forgers.

She's a friend - don't see where we disagree.
What is a 'friend' in the bush world?
What exactly is your question regarding bush and running out on his national guard service to work on the political campaign of a family friend just as his physical (including a drug test)was due? What do you disagree with? What of the whole affair paints bush in any other light in today's reality than as a hypocrite and coward?
The only purpuse of other people in the bush familty reality is what these people can do for them. That is my opinion.
Our perceptions are not that different. Yes, she is a friend. You earn your friendship in the bush reality with devotion. She worships the friggin guy.
Right now any opinion on Miers is a total guess anyway...except pro business... but social conservatism? Nobody knows.
The plame investigation by fitzgerald has been interesting to watch. Hold on to your hat Slu. It could turn into a bust but a I wouldn't put much chance in that at this stage.
It's going to be an interesting three years.

Tell me about it. That's another thing I don't like about this nomination - he didn't pick the best, he picked the most loyal.
Yup, we agree on this one, I think.
But come on, the TANG story? There's plenty to knock the president about in the here and now. No need to go back to the 70s.

I'm not sure what to think yet.
Hugh Hewitt seems pretty optimistic about this. Have you read his thoughts on this?
Posted by: Hal at October 3, 2005 09:59 PM
I have. Hewitt is usually pretty optimistic in general. I just think this is one instance where maybe Miers is a conservative, but she wasn't the best choice.

How much do you all want to bet that Miers is not intended to be the real nominee, but has been nominated purely to chart out the Democrats' plan to oppose it, with the lessons learned applied to the next, real candidate? With as much loyalty as she has, she'd be willing to let herself get dragged through the mud for the sake of The Cause, and then to either lose the nomination or to humiliatingly pull out. Maybe she's got some major dirt somewhere waiting to be found, that Rove already knows about.

Joe, don't give away the secret! If you do, the Dems will just hoodwink us and actually confirm her!
Posted by: Hal at October 4, 2005 10:35 AM
I think that's the beauty of it all, for a neo-con: if she does get confirmed, great, another ideologue on the Court. If not, the Dems have to show some cards. I'm not a neo-con, though traditionally a Republican I'm getting pretty tired of this adminstration, so I tihnk this whole thing is just stupid. I'm sure O'Connor thinks so, I bet she was looking forward to some time off before the winter weather hit.

Nahh! No need to go back to the 70's. Of course, that is unless you're looking for dirt on Al Gore or John Kerry, two Democrats who, like Bush, could also have used position to avoid an early death, but went anyway. Funny how you are pro-life, but being jumped ahead of 500 hopefuls on the TANG list, thereby dooming at least a few Texans to a swampy death in Vietnam, is OK. Love the fetus; to hell with the 18-year olds.

Amazing how you've managed to cram so many talking points into one short post.
You, sir, have a gift.
Treasure it.
