I Like My Wireless Internet, But...
I'm not sure I'd go as far as San Francisco's Mayor:
SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who became internationally known for his campaign a year ago to legalise gay marriage, said on Monday he considered wireless Internet access a fundamental right of all citizens.Hm. Universal wireless would certainly come in handy sometimes. Here in Maine, though, I'd settle for good cell phone reception between towns.Newsom told a news conference that he was bracing for a battle with telephone and cable interests, along with state and U.S. regulators, whom he said were looking to derail a campaign by cities to offer free or low-cost municipal Wi-Fi services.
Wi-Fi is a short-range wireless technology that is now built into most laptop computers and is increasingly offered on handheld computers and certain mobile phones. Local officials are mulling plans to blanket every nook and cranny of this hilly city of 750,000 residents with Wi-Fi access.
"This is inevitable -- Wi-Fi. It is long overdue," Newsom told a news conference at San Francisco's City Hall. "It is to me a fundamental right to have access universally to information," he said.

I love how easily things go from "commercial privelege" to "universal right" in the minds of some people.
If having tuna fish stuck up your nose became a major trend, there are people who would expect government to provide it for everyone (it's a universal right!).

Tuna fish stuck up your nose?
There's an image that's going to stick with me the rest of the day.
I think you've got a good point about "rights creep." When I worked at Wal-Mart, we'd once in awhile have to ask people to leave the store. What we most often heard as we escorted them out? "But I have a right to shop here!"
Posted by: Slublog at October 4, 2005 09:57 AM
Wait a second here - are you people seriously claiming that nostril fish and Wal-Mart shopping aren't universal rights?
Bah, you make me sick!

The only problem I really run into with this kind of thing is when the topic of medical care comes up. Does a person have a fundamental right to medical treatment, or is it only something you should get if it can be paid for (barring any generosity by people willing to pay for it/do it for free)?
My jury's still out on it. You feel like a monster saying, "Oh, can't pay for your broken arm? Well, hit the road sucker!" On the other hand, universal coverage by the government would lead to government subsidization of such, and we know how well enterprises grow and progress under governmental management.

Who's going to buy WIFI-enabled devices so all of these poor bastards can exercise their "fundamental right?" Hell, I'm not poor and *I* don't even own a WIFI capable device.
I think this falls into the liberal "Just do it for the chuldrun!" category of BS.

"It is to me a fundamental right to have access universally to information,"
What's the issue folks? Does anyone disagree?
"Newsom told a news conference that he was bracing for a battle with telephone and cable interests, along with state and U.S. regulators, whom he said were looking to derail a campaign by cities to offer free or low-cost municipal Wi-Fi services." - I would like to know more about this ? Does this not piss anyone off?
Newsome is following an angle to beat opposing business interests who are against his plan - why? Because it's bad for the cable guys and cable regulators (see business and government working together to protect profits and turf - hey they can get along!!!!)
Why does Newsome like:
a) yes, he can rationalize the plan with his political beliefs - universal access to information - his ego feels good. I don't disagree with him.
b)"Making wireless access affordable to the entire population of San Francisco was a vital step to differentiating the city in order to make it more economically competitive on a state, national and global level, Newsom said."
We've switched over our laptops here and trust me - it's very nice for business to have these hotspots - we already have them marked throughout the US.- conventions, head office, area sales offices, it's sweet.
I love how right wingers enjoy getting pissed on by corporations and government if it means limiting something that would be of benefit to all- including himself.

Sorry. Just don't think it's a "fundamental right." Unless, of course, you include it under the all-encompassing "pursuit of happiness."
Posted by: Slublog at October 4, 2005 08:45 PM
And how long before he espouses the "right" of the homeless to have laptops?

"It is to me a fundamental right to have access universally to information."
What's the issue folks? Does anyone disagree?Sure I do. It's called "privacy." Or are you saying I have a fundamental right to know all your financial information, all your medical information, the event in your past that you are most ashamed of, what you and your wife/GF/SO did in bed last night, etc.?

Thanks Slu/Joe
maniac - for me it is simple - public information should be accessed by all. If libraries become a figure of the past and information (read education) is all electronic, yes, we must ensure it can be accessed by all.
Joe is right...people have no right to personal, private information. It is a line that can be easily defined. But it's about access to public information.
If you want to talk about keeping the government out of your bedroom joe, don't look at democrats as the culprits.
Slu - so if information is 'public' you don't agree that it should be accessible to all, by right? Some will say that if it's in the internet ether - well it's accessible - but is it if people can't afford sed access. As in affording a university education.
Slu, do you mind adding more to your point?
To me Education and Health Care are universal rights that every nation should strive to provide to its citizens. Others want to keep the education advantage to themselves....then point at those stupid n*****s and S****S.
Here's another where the right keeps my head scratching:
Government is generally bad and we should minimize it as much as possible and keep a close eye on what they are doing.....but....will jump up and down and defend Cheney's right to hold 'secret' energy policy meetings and keep these discussions from seeing the light of day.............why? Like right wingers against the freedom to information act. It just doesn't compute guys.

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.

I added your blog to bookmarks. And i’ll read your articles more often! Before this, it would be possible for the government to arrest you just based on whatever you were saying, if they didn't like it.
