Was "The Bomb" Necessary?

Tomorrow marks the 60th anniversary of the first use of an atomic weapon in wartime - the bombing of Hiroshima. Victor Davis Hanson looks at the still-ongoing debate.

I think so. "One Hundred Million Die Together" wasn't just a propaganda slogan, it was the actual plan. There was no other way to atone to the Emperor and to the Gods and ancestors for failing to keep the barbarians from invading. It was national hara-kiri. The Japanese military was prepared to fight conventional warfare to the extinction of the race, but the use of "a new and most cruel bomb" gave the miltary leaders a face-saving way to accept Hirihito's desire to capitulate. We can fight against soldiers with bamboo spears if we have to, but who can fight against atomic bombs?
