Not a Good Endorsement
You know, this probably isn't the support Cindy Sheehan wanted. For its sake, I hope the anti-war left begins to realize soon just what a liability this woman really is.
Sheehan said she considered Lynne Stewart her Atticus Finch, the lawyer who defended an innocent Black man accused of rape in the book and film “To Kill A Mockingbird.” “They’re not waging a War on Terror but a War of Terror,” she said. “The biggest terrorist is George W. Bush.”Press coverage of the war has been relatively negative, but I think the canonizing of this woman is a major misstep by the mainstream media. "We are waging nuclear war in Iraq?" Does that even have a basis in reality?"We have no Constitution. We’re the only country with no checks and balances. We want our country back if we have to impeach George Bush down to the person who picks up the dog sh-t in Washington! Let George Bush send his two little party animals to die in Iraq. It’s OK for Israel to have nuclear weapons but we are waging nuclear war in Iraq, we have contaminated the entire country. It’s not OK for Syria to be in Lebanon. Hypocrites! But Israel can occupy Palestine? Stop the slaughter!"
The more that we learn about Cindy Sheehan, the worse she looks. The media made a mistake by publicizing her story and her crusade against the president before looking into her past statements. I think reporters and bloggers should refrain from looking into Sheehan's personal life, but think pointing out the rhetoric she's used in the past is a legitimate line of inquiry.
Over the next few days, as we learn more about Sheehan's past statements and associations, the media and liberal blogs will slowly start to separate themselves from her. Sheehan suffered a terrible loss, but her grief does not entitle her to say outrageous things in public without being criticized for them.
UPDATE - Howard Dean ties the DNC to Sheehan and says the president should meet with her. Which he's already done, by the way.

That's just nuts...
I would add one more thing:
She claims that "We have no Constitution. We’re the only country with no checks and balances." and then jumps right into the normal state of rabid lefties, cognitive dissonance: "we have to impeach George Bush down to the person who picks up the dog sh-t in Washington!"
Tell me, if we have no Constitution how can we impeach the President?

Is it really slime if you're using her own words against her?
I guess for a lot of people on the left it's the last defense they have.

Hey, Bill. Good to see you.
The FAQ about depleted uranium was interesting. Thanks. I especially liked this part:
While gamma rays are a form of highly-penetrating energy , the amount of gamma radiation emitted by depleted uranium is very low. Thus, depleted uranium does not significantly add to the background radiation that we encounter every day.And this part:
Those DU-exposed friendly fire individuals with elevated levels of urinary uranium nine years after the Gulf War have not developed kidney abnormalities, leukemia, bone or lung cancer, or any classical uranium-related adverse outcome. Some nuclear war.
As for the other article, it's about some missing nuclear waste. Yes, that is bad. But how is someone looting a nuclear site count as the U.S. waging nuclear war against Iraqis?
Posted by: Slublog at August 15, 2005 01:19 PM
For the record, I think the military should find alternatives to DU. Even if there are no immediate health effects, playing with radioactive stuff just seems dangerous.
Posted by: Slublog at August 15, 2005 01:27 PM
I've looked into the DU thing a little. (As a chemist, I have a particular interest in it)
The Uranium they use for these has to be U-238, as it's the most abundant in nature.
The thing about U-238 is that it has a ridiculously large half-life. Longer than a lifetime.
So, despite the fact that it emits dangerous radiation, it emits very little radiation. Just like the poster stated above.
Which isn't to say that having radioactive agents floating around is a good idea. But the danger has to be practically zero.

Hey Slu
a) the lady you quoted was using pretty wild rhetoric - but if you want to 'understand' what she was speaking to I provided my guess.
Yes, the US not only had a moral obligation to secure nuclear production and waste facilities in an invasion - they have a legal responsibility. People were using barrels that until recently stored N waste to catch rain water. Not good.
Hey, I spent 20 sec on google and came up with two 'conservative' sources for you. Be happy.
I hope you're as even handed with 'literally' dissecting right-wing rhetoric as you are the left, you know "they hate us for our freedoms".

No problem.
Now get your feet off the coffee table...

I've been struck that several usual suspects on the left have noticeably shied away from Cindy; among others, Wonkette and Josh Marshall. For another project I listened to the entire Monday 8/8/05 broadcast of Al Franken's show, and noticed it again; this was before Sheehan had become the darling of the media. We have to remember that while this is about the first she's caught the attention of the general public and conservative bloggers, she's been around the left-wing carnival for over a year now, and they've had a chance to size her up. I suspect they sense that she's going to discredit them and the anti-war cause with her inflammatory rhetoric.
