Satellite Watching

Here is an astronomy activity anyone can do: watching satellites such as the International Space Station pass by overhead. Every night there are at least half a dozen artificial satellites that are visible to the naked eye and require no special training to find. Here is how to see them:

  1. Go to www.heavens-above.com (don't forget the hyphen or you'll go to, ahem, a different kind of website!) and select your location.
  2. Bookmark the page that comes up so you don't have to enter in your location each time you visit.

The two items to start with are the ISS and Iridium flares. The ISS predictions are the first ones under the heading, "Satellites." When you click on that link you get a local date, a magnitude (the lower the number, including negatives, the brighter), and the starting point, highest point, and ending point for the pass. Times are for a 24-hour clock, Alt. (altitude) is the number of degrees above the horizon, and Az. (azimuth) is the compass direction. The ISS looks like a slow moving, unblinking plane.

Iridium flares are caused by sunlight glinting off the communication antennae of Iridium satellites, which run certain cell phones. They can be up to 100 times brighter than Venus, the brightest planet, but only last a few seconds. On this page (the link is a few lines below the ISS one) the time is given to the second, and the azimuth is given in degrees. These are bright enough, though, that you are unlikely to miss them if you look at the right time. Here is the US Naval Observatory's internet atomic clock that is accurate to the second. You'll see the satellite gradually brighten and fade for about twenty seconds before and after the flare, and the flare itself lasts about two seconds.

There are lots of other astronomy-related items tailored to your location at the site. Have fun, and please leave a comment if you see anything!
