Sullivan Inconsistency Watch
Okay, this isn't really fair, as Andrew Sullivan is rarely consistent in his political views. But this one strikes me as particularly egregious:
TORYISM REVIVING? A very encouraging development in Britain: a coalition of conservatives demanding more local democracy and decision-making. Yes, imagine that: a conservatism trying to reduce the power of the central government. Then there's his "Quote of the Day," a feature in which he highlights things others say to make them look dumb.
QUOTE OF THE DAY II: "Texans have made a decision about marriage and if there is some other state that has a more lenient view than Texas then maybe that's a better place for them (gay and lesbian families) to live." - Texas governor, Rick Perry, last Sunday.Given his love of local democracy and decision making, shouldn't he be in favor of Texas' decision to choose its own way on gay marriage? Sullivan has also criticized Texas' law on sodomy, a law worthy of criticism in my opinion, but it's still a decision made locally using the democratic process.
That's the problem with having one's beliefs dependent on emotion - it just doesn't lead to political coherance.
