Providing Context for MSNBC, Again
MSNBC has a story in the 'purple prose' tradition: "Bloody May for U.S. Troops in Iraq." In the story, a Cato Institute defense analyst is quoted as saying the insurgency is tougher than we thought:
Defense analysts said the recent violence was the latest evidence Iraq remains an uncertain project for America.Would it have really been too much to ask of the reporter to check Carpenter's past writings on Iraq? He was against the war in December of 2002. He's been critical of the war effort since. Repeatedly. In the story, he's only identified as a 'defense analyst.' A more accurate description would have been 'defense analyst who has been critical of the war.' Carpenter has the right to believe what he wishes, but his opinion does color his analysis, and readers should be given such information so we can judge his words ourselves.“Those who believed that the elections would be a decisive turning point undermining the insurgency are disappointed yet again,” Cato Institute defense analyst Ted Carpenter said. “The insurgency seems as capable as ever.”
Once again, shame on MSNBC.

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.
