Nostalgia Trip

Just watched "Red Dawn" for the first time in years. Wow. Were we really that paranoid in the 80s?

Overall, I enjoyed watching the movie again. The acting is wooden, the sound effects are silly and the plot is basically a bunch of battle scenes strung together. It's pretty much the fantasy of a kid growing up during the Cold War - getting to fight the invading Soviets on our home turf.

I did notice some major plot holes, though. First, why didn't the KGB stop the Wolverines when they first entered town? Second, how did one of them manage to sneak away to visit his dad and get caught without the rest of them noticing? And finally, why didn't the Russians just send up a few helicopters to blow the heck out of the Wolverines in the mountains? The morons had fires going all the time - they would have been pretty easy to find.

Despite all of these questions, the movie was fun.

What's interesting is that when I watched the movie for the first time in the 80s, I spoke no Russian. These days, I speak some of that language and was extremely impressed by the quality of the Russian spoken in the movie. As far as I can tell, the grammar is good and the pronounciation is excellent. Who would have thought?

And as if watching "Red Dawn" weren't enough, I find out that Molly Ringwald is in talks to make a sequel to "Sixteen Candles" and that "Goonies 2" may happen.
