Giving God a Bad Name
Instapundit has a lot of links on Fred Phelps, of "God Hates Fags" infamy, and his recent habit of showing up at military funerals with signs like "Thank God for 9/11," "America is Doomed" and "Thank God for IEDs."
I think I'll let the words of Another communicate my thoughts on Phelps and his brand of fundamentalism:
"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and do many mighty works in your name?' And then will I declare to them, 'I never knew you; depart from me, you workers of lawlessness.'Fred Phelps strikes me as a man who has let his own personal prejudices get in the way of his fidelity to God's word.
Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.Okay, maybe one comment - this man is sick and does not represent the God of the Bible. God does not delight in death, but Fred Phelps and his ilk seem to get a real kick out of it and use it as an excuse to peddle their particular brand of hate. I once wrote Phelps an email protesting his methods, and received a response accusing me of being an apostate who was destined for hell.
Phelps may be free to spread his hatred here on earth, but the Bible promises he has received his reward in full. I have the feeling that God doesn't really like being misrepresented or mocked. I can only hope, for Phelps' sake, that he realizes this before it's too late.
