Passing the Perennial Legislation
Boy, I'm glad Congress is really tackling the pressing issues of our time. These Republican members of Congress are unbelievable. They won't fight for Social Security reform, they're spending money like mad and they shrink in fear everytime the media or the Democrats say something bad about them. But give them a chance to pass basically symbolic legislation and they jump at it.
I think the American flag should be shown respect for what it represents. But it's not a sacred relic. I believe that those who burn an American flag are showing disrespect for the country that allows them to, well, burn the flag. But disrespect is not a crime, and it should not be made one.
America is bigger than the symbols that represent it. When the media obsessed over "Koran abuse" at Gitmo, I thought it was ridiculous to make a big fuss over a book, no matter what that book represented. The same applies to our flag. If someone wants to burn it, shame on them. But let's not make it a federal case.
