A Political Gift to the Republicans

Senator Dick Durbin, it seems, has created the latest blogswarm and has given the Republican party an invaluable political gift - a Democrat making comments that are anti-military in a time of war.

Unless Senator Durbin apologizes for his remarks soon, expect to see his comments played over and over again in the upcoming election season. Harry Reid and the rest of the Senators who have thus far either supported Durbin or have not made any comment on his speech are not doing their party any favors. They are doing the oppositional response instead of the politically smart one. Since Durbin's remarks made Republicans angry, they cannot possibly be wrong in the eyes of those like Reid.

What Reid and company fail to see is how angry these remarks will make normal Americans who may be iffy on the war, but who honestly do appreciate the sacrifices soldiers are making. Such a voter may not want to hear outright support of the war, but they probably don't want soldiers compared to the troops of murderous regimes.

Next year's elections are going to be interesting. I still do not plan to give money to the Republican party, as they might use it to prop up the campaigns of those with whom I disagree. I may give money to individual candidates in local or statewide races.

Olympia Snowe will still not get my vote, but given the Democratic party's appalling response to Senator Durbin's remarks, neither will her opponent. I think I'm going to write in the name of a friend.

UPDATE - Poster D. Carter points out this post by Captain Ed that details some torture much closer to home that Durbin hasn't gotten all that upset about.
