Republicans Engineer Defeat - Updated

A deal was reached on judicial nominees, and it's terrible.

The Democrats retain the right to filibuster judicial nominees and in exchange the Republicans get the "right" to an up-or-down vote on most of the nominees. Senator Frist, you have truly earned this:

chamberfrist.jpg

Ace, Captain Ed and Powerline have more on this extraordinary capitulation on the part of Republicans. I'm so angry right now I'll have to let them speak for me. What's the point of having a majority when wimps like this are a part of it?

Captain Ed says Snowe and Collins were both part of this deal. I will give no money to the Maine GOP this year, unless someone in the party has the guts to challenge Snowe in a primary. And Senator Collins? We've got long memories. Enjoy your last term.

UPDATE - I cannot believe this. Riehl World View notes part of the deal includes this phrase:

We believe that under Article II, Section 2 the word "Advice" speaks to consultation between the Senate and the President with regard to the use of the President's power to make nominations. We encourage the Executive branch of government to consult with members of the Senate, both Democratic and Republican, prior to submitting a nomination to the Senate for consideration.
This is a blatant violation of the separation of powers. The Senate simply does not have the authority to put demands on the Executive branch of government. The president should tell them that he is under no obligation to honor this deal and he'll nominate who he likes. No Republican will get any money from me next year. Not one.

UPDATE II - I just sent a letter to the GOP:

Mr. Melhman,

Congratulations. With the deal agreed to in the Senate, the
Republican party just lost any money I was going to give next election season, and Senator Snowe has lost my vote.

Please do not send any fundraising appeals to the below address, as
they will simply be discarded.

I believe in the short and sweet approach.

UPDATE III - Hey, I got called a wingnut. I'm touched.

By the way, welcome Michelle Malkin, LaShawn Barber, Bogus Gold and yes, Dadahead readers. While readers of the last blog on the list may not agree with me, I appreciate the fact that both of you a few of you (make a bad joke, get traffic - everything's working according to plan) took the time to stop by.

UPDATE - I see from some of the trackbacks or Site Meter reference links that some are saying the above photoshop is comparing the Democrats to the Nazis. Um, no.

The picture is meant to convey nothing more than the opinion held by me and others that Frist, like Chamberlain, is a naive fool who made a bad deal and called it a success.

Given the left's love of Nazi symbolism when it comes to Republicans, I find the comments pretty amusing. Pot and kettle, boys. Pot and kettle.

I took your letter to Mr. Melhman one step further. Tonight I received a follow-up fundraising letter based on my recent donation to help with these efforts towards stalled judicial nominations. I sent him a similar note; however, I had the privilege of a pre-paid business reply envelope. I made sure to include a sentence explaining that I would not be using my own stamp b/c I wanted them to feel the $.37 pinch of my immediate anger. I'm tempted to go to Arizona and work to defeat McCain. He's just pissing me off too much lately.

McCain is addicted to the adulation of the media. His ability to lead is compromised by his need for attention.

dadahead reader here. I was just looking through your Site Meter log, and it looks like I'm the third to come through in the last couple hours. That's officially a dadalanche. Congrats!

You seem so defensive, Slu. I've never met a lefty who collects Nazi paraphenilia, so I can't confirm that we have a "love of Nazi symbolism".

Sure, there are some fringe types who like to conflate Bush with Hitler, but as Ted Rall pointed out, Adolf was reasonably intelligent and took personal responsibility.

And I'm sure you understand how some would have misinterpreted the Chamberlain reference. It's only tangentially related to war mongering and genocide, y'know?

Posted by: Ryan at May 24, 2005 11:25 AM

I can understand how some might interpret it, but I disagree with them.

Just an FYI - your website isn't working right. Tried to visit, but could not.

Senator McCain is a difficult guy to figure. He is ever trying to quietly block organic agriculture. Mostly though, he will ever oppose President Bush, even on issues he formerly supported.

Sort of reminds me of the historic "Burr".

Posted by: Cannonball at May 24, 2005 02:11 PM

Hey, you guys are doing pretty good in the Nazi-invoking rhetoric yourselves ... e.g. Rick 'Pretty Boy' Santorum.

Posted by: Dadahead at May 24, 2005 06:39 PM

Also, how do you know those Bush-as-Nazi pictures were created by lefties? They could have been made by admiring Nazis! :-D

Posted by: Dadahead at May 24, 2005 06:43 PM

By the way, what's the story behind 'Slublog'?

Posted by: Dadahead at May 24, 2005 06:45 PM

I'll see your Santorum and raise you a Byrd. :-)

Plus, for the record, I think Santorum is a bit of a moron.

As for the blog name, it's based on the name "Slubgob," a character from C.S. Lewis' "The Screwtape Letters" and a name I've used for years on internet discussion boards and such.

I've been meaning to do on this site what you've done on yours - offer an explanation, but have thus far been too lazy.
