A New Media Obsession - Updated

It's good to see the media so concerned about the level of staffing in the military all of a sudden. From MSNBC, today: "Army misses recruiting goal for 3rd month."

Do you remember this level of examination of recruitment from the mainstream media during the Clinton administration? Neither do I, but there was a similar problem back then:

Faced with an unusual drop-off in new recruits, the Air Force plans for the first time to join the other armed services and pay for national television advertisements to try to persuade young men and women to sign up...

All of the services have faced difficulties with recruiting and retention. The Army's recruiting problem appears even more dire. From October to January, the Army fell 2,479 enlistees, or 13 percent, short of its recruiting goal of 19,020, despite a flurry of advertisements and bonuses.

The article is from 1999, and from a small internet publication. Guess it wasn't that important to the big guys. After all, Clinton was president.

UPDATE - In July of 1999, Accuracy in Media complained about the lack of attention given low military recruitment levels:

Just as we completed our recent Media Monitor on the national media ignoring the collapse of military recruitment, the Washington Times has published an article on how the Air Force is at a 20-year low in recruiting, and how members of Congress are talking about the return of the military draft. The article is from the San Antonio Express-News, a Texas newspaper, and describes how the Air Force may fall 2,500 soldiers short of its recruitment goal in the current fiscal year. The State newspaper in Columbia, South Carolina, had previously run an article on the same subject, disclosing shortages in the Army and the Air Force.

The problem is that the San Antonio paper parroted the Clinton Administration line that the problem can be attributed to a strong economy which is attracting young people into the civilian sector. The paper quoted a Pentagon spokesman as saying, "We have a booming economy, which we are grateful to see, but it does mean that we have the lowest unemployment in about 30 years and fierce competition for talented young people." By contrast, the Columbia paper had also noted the increasing tendency to assign our troops to dead-end peacekeeping missions, such as Kosovo. This is taking a savage toll on military recruitment.

So the media basically ignored a story they are now hyping and bought into the Clinton spin back then?

Say it isn't so.

The Zune concentrates on being a Portable Media Player. Not a web browser. Not a game machine. Maybe in the future it'll do even better in those areas, but for now it's a fantastic way to organize and listen to your music and videos, and is without peer in that regard. The iPod's strengths are its web browsing and apps. If those sound more compelling, perhaps it is your best choice.

Well I truly like studying it. This post offered by you is very practical for proper planning.

If you're still on the fence: grab your favorite earphones, head down to a Best Buy and ask to plug them into a Zune then an iPod and see which one sounds better to you, and which interface makes you smile more. Then you'll know which is right for you.

Posted by: Sohbet at March 1, 2011 04:49 AM

Zune and iPod: Most people compare the Zune to the Touch, but after seeing how slim and surprisingly small and light it is, I consider it to be a rather unique hybrid that combines qualities of both the Touch and the Nano. It's very colorful and lovely OLED screen is slightly smaller than the touch screen, but the player itself feels quite a bit smaller and lighter. It weighs about 2/3 as much, and is noticeably smaller in width and height, while being just a hair thicker.

Hands down, Apple's app store wins by a mile. It's a huge selection of all sorts of apps vs a rather sad selection of a handful for Zune. Microsoft has plans, especially in the realm of games, but I'm not sure I'd want to bet on the future if this aspect is important to you. The iPod is a much better choice in that case.

Posted by: chat at March 4, 2011 02:56 AM

Apple now has Rhapsody as an app, which is a great start, but it is currently hampered by the inability to store locally on your iPod, and has a dismal 64kbps bit rate. If this changes, then it will somewhat negate this advantage for the Zune, but the 10 songs per month will still be a big plus in Zune Pass' favor.

My wife and i got really fulfilled that Raymond could round up his preliminary research via the precious recommendations he discovered out of the web site. It's not at all simplistic just to continually be releasing instructions some others have been making money from. Therefore we recognize we've got the writer to thank because of that. The type of illustrations you have made, the simple site menu, the relationships you can give support to instill - it's all awesome, and it's leading our son in addition to the family believe that this matter is thrilling, and that is particularly indispensable. Many thanks for all the pieces!
