Homophobia's Okay...

...if you're a Democratic former president, I guess.

Arthur Finkelstein launched a campaign against Hillary Clinton's bid for the presidency. Bill Clinton didn't like this, so his answer to the criticism was to attack Finkelstein's sexuality:

"He went to Massachusetts and married his longtime male partner and then he comes back here and announces this," Clinton said at a Harlem news conference.

"I thought, one of two things. Either this guy believes his party is not serious, and is totally Machiavellian in his position, or there's some sort of self-loathing there. I was more sad for him."

If a Republican had used the sexuality of a political opponent as an attack point, there would be outrage.

But the usual suspects are silent on this one.

He is truly ugly when the mask slips. Others in that category include Mrs. Clinton (or is it Rodham?) and Richard Nixon.

Don't forget your friend and mine - John Edwards.

Yes, John Edwards. Might also include Algore.

From http://www.religioustolerance.or...rg/ hom_mar6.htm. Notice that Bill Clinton didn't write it. Notice from which party it emerged. Check the vote and see which party was less in favor of it. Then, in that context, try and defend the Fink and proceed with attacking Willie. But please don't pretend that Willie signed DOMA in a vacuum...

U.S. Federal Government "DOMA" Law

A "Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)" was written by Representative Steve Largent (R-OK). It defines the term marriage within Federal law as meaning "only a legal union between one man and one woman as husband and wife." The act also excuses each state from having to follow the "full faith and credit" clause of the US constitution; this would allow a state to refuse to recognize a marriage made in another state if the spouses were of the same gender. A similar bill, S. 1740, was introduced to the Senate on 1996-MAY-8 by Senator Don Nickles (OK).

Senator Jesse Helms (NC) warned that "the homosexual lobby," was trying to "force their agenda upon the vast majority of Americans" and was "willing to tear apart America's moral fabric."

You want to try that URL again? It led nowhere.

President Clinton may not have signed DOMA in a vacuum, but the important thing is that he signed it. He could have vetoed it. He could have rallied the support of the American people.

But he didn't.

Ultimately, that's his legacy. He signed it.
