Appreciating Lent
As a Catholic, I grew up with the knowledge that every year, I would have to give up something I enjoyed between Ash Wednesday and Easter. Like most who grew up with this tradition, my attempts to give up homework or broccoli were unsucessful so I usually gave up something like chocolate.
When I converted to the Protestant faith, the idea of Lent was relegated to my past, and I gave up the practice of giving up. Until college, when I started thinking about Jesus and His sacrifice more seriously. The idea of giving something I enjoyed up to remind myself of the reason behind Easter seemed like a good idea.
Mark D. Roberts has a good article on Lent, and how it can make a difference in a Protestant's relationship with God.
