A Profoundly Silly Idea

As regular readers of this blog know, I like music and consider my iPod a beloved member of my family. One of my guilty pleasure activities is looking at the "Celebrity Playlist" feature of iTunes. It's always fascinating to see what other people are listening to, as it helps me find new music.

So here's the silly idea - a Carnival of the Playlists. Every couple of weeks, or month, have all interested bloggers list the songs currently on their iPod or WinAmp playlists. Becuase admit it, you all want to know whether Ace and Glenn Reynolds listen to the same music.

Anyone interested can email me. Contact information is on the right-hand side.

Oh, and if anyone can think of a better name than the probably over-used "carnival" thing, let me know.

UPDATE - Welcome Ace, readers. Ace brings up a point I hadn't thought of - how to organize this playlist thing. Make a post with a few songs you're currently listening to more than others, or a selection that best shows what's in your playist. For example, mine would include a lot of U2, since I'm always listening to them. Every bit of music in your thousand-song collection isn't necessary...

UPDATE II - How Many Songs?

A couple of commenters have asked how many songs they should put on their list. Since I'm asking people to post this on their own blogs (and pretty much making it up as I go along), the exact number of songs is up to you. I figure a half-dozen to a dozen is good - feel free to explain why you enjoy them at the moment, too.

After all, sometimes shuffle will pick a song that I skip this week, but might feel like listening to it next week.

How big of a list do you want? I've got over 4000 songs on my iPod.

Posted by: Sean Hackbarth at March 29, 2005 07:17 PM

I'm in! Except I have the same question as Sean: What's the target #? For variety, you might want to specify a total number AND a maximum number per artist. Get people to edit a little instead of just "Look at ALL the songs I have on my iPod!"

4000!?! Man, I've only got 1100 and I'm wondering how on earth I'm going to find more...

What about simply "iCarnival"?

Do all songs need to be available on the iTunes Music Store?
If so, Apple would love you for this and if you become one of their affiliates (easy to do), people could buy tunes through your site and you could get a little kick-back.

Although I love the idea of crazy-blog money, it's not a requirement that the tunes be from the apple program.

"iCarnival" That's good. I'll have to think about that one...

How many? How about enough to fill a 74 or 80 minute cd? Maybe several qualified playlists: commuter music, workout music, quiet-evening-with-someone-special background music, etc. Or, for those who don't really want to think too long about it, just publish your iTunes Top 25 Most Played playlist or Recently Played playlist.
And yeah, Carnival of... is way over-used.
